Monday, October 06, BEING attracted to the opposite sex is a natural, healthy part of life, but when it comes to being an unmarried Christian who’s dating, the million dollar question is, ‘How far is too far? At one end of the scale is the radical fundamentalist Christian who will save all forms of affection — even holding hands — for after marriage; and at the other end is the more liberal Christian who will allow public expressions of affection, like kissing, as long as it comes with certain boundaries. For most Christians there is no sex before marriage, but the battle lines are drawn when it comes to what other forms of affection are allowed. The issue for many is whether it is possible to feel affection for someone; such affection that will make you contemplate marriage, yet you aren’t allowed to show that affection until the wedding day when you’re expected to transform from emotionless to affectionate. My husband didn’t once tell me that I was attractive.

Unfortunately, in the United States, the institution of marriage is in crisis. Recent studies show that about one-third of all Americans who are or have been married have also been divorced at least once. Among self-professed evangelical Christian believers, 26 percent reportedly have been divorced. It is imperative at such a time that the Christian church clarify, teach, and faithfully uphold what the Bible says about marriage. The Church must also speak biblically to the issue of divorce and remarriage, which occur all too often as one, or both, marital partners abandon their Christian ethical commitments and responsibilities.
A careful study of the Old and New Testament Scriptures yields the following salient principles that bear on divorce and remarriage.

The same principle holds true for women who find loving and responsible husbands. Marriages are not only a basis for happiness, they offer us longer and better-quality lives. They are also the building blocks of communities, societies and, ultimately, civilizations. The foundation for a good marriage is laid long before the wedding ceremony. Parents should determine when their children are ready to date based on their maturity and readiness to accept responsibility for their actions.
When we first begin dating, it should be for the purpose of social development-that is, learning about the opposite sex and the many differences in human personality, values and temperament. Of course, even dating for marriage often begins on a social basis of getting to know another person.

With a constituency of over 3 million, the Assemblies of God was the ninth largest Christian denomination and the second largest Pentecostal denomination in the United States in The Assemblies of God holds to a conservative , evangelical and Arminian theology as expressed in the Statement of Fundamental Truths and position papers, which emphasize such core Pentecostal doctrines as the baptism in the Holy Spirit , speaking in tongues , divine healing and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
It defines for itself a fourfold mission to evangelize others, worship God, disciple believers, and show compassion. The fellowship’s polity is a hybrid of presbyterian and congregational models. This tension between local independence and national authority is seen in the AG’s historical reluctance to refer to itself as a denomination, preferring the terms fellowship and movement.
The AG considers salvation, baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, divine healing and the Second Coming of Christ to be its four core beliefs. The Assemblies of God holds the Arminian position on salvation. While it agrees with the Calvinist position that God is sovereign, at the same time, it believes that mankind has free will —free to accept or reject God’s gift of salvation and eternal life. Instead, the Assemblies of God believes that salvation is received and kept by faith, if faith in Christ is lost, then salvation is lost.
According to the Statement of Fundamental Truths, “All believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek” the baptism in the Spirit. It also states, “This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church”. It is a separate experience from and occurs after salvation.

When I thought about it, I had to agree. Building a relationship with someone whose Christian life is very different to our own, and with whom we may disagree profoundly on theological issues, can be very challenging. A lot depends on our previous experiences of church good and bad , and what Christian tradition feels most authentic to us. For instance, if you hate noisy worship, find succour in liturgy and ritual, and see prayer as a strictly private practice, then you may struggle to find a meeting point with someone who expects to pray out loud together every day, go to praise-a-thons and lead a homegroup.
Some couples make it work. Another couple I know go to different churches.

The AG believes that husbands and wives are to function as partners; however, they also believe the husband bears the responsibility of leadership in the home. The AG recognizes divorce and remarriage under circumstances such as infidelity or abandonment, but maintains that lifelong marriage to one spouse is the ideal.
Those who have divorced and remarried may enjoy membership in a local church, but are not generally allowed to hold ministerial credentials.
